Abstract

A reel for a motor vehicle seat belt has a shaft (3) which has a helical coupling at one end to a toothed wheel (25) on which a collar (31) with ratchet teeth (32) is rotatably mounted by friction for engagement with a pivoted pawl (46) carried by a cover (34), fixed over one end of the shaft, which cover has internal ratchet teeth engageable with associated ratchet teeth (26) on the toothed wheel when the latter is displaced on the shaft by the helical coupling. The cover (34) is attachable to the shaft support body (2) in different angular positions and the orientation of the pivot axis of the pawl (46) on the cover is adjustable angularly from a central position in which it is parallel to the shaft, enabling the reel to be mounted on different types of vehicle without structural modification. <IMAGE>
