Abstract

1464540 Exercise device R D DAVIES 26 June 1974 [27 June 1973] 30574/73 Heading A6M An exercise device comprising a frame 1, a drum 5 mounted in the frame and rotated by means of pedal-operated crankshaft 4, a band 11 extending around part of the circumference of the drum and connected to the frame at one end by claw 12 and at the other by tension indicating means (13), comprising spring balance mechanism 16, such that the band frictionally engages the drum end the tension indicating means (13) indicates the load that has to be applied by an athlete or patient to rotate the drum. The tension of the band is achieved initially by positioning claw 12 into one of a plurality of apertures and then adjusted by turning cylinder 21 having knurled head 17 connected via threaded rod 18 to spring balance 16. The load applied is indicated by a pointer.on spring balance 16. For interval training wherein periods of "effort" are followed by periods of "rest", additional tension changing means 25 is employed which comprises spaced arms 28, having lugs 30 and 31 which engage knurled head 17, and 34 pivotally mounted on bracket 29 and connected by cable 33 to handlebar mounted lever 38. When lever 38 is operated, owing to adjustable stop 36, arm 28 is pivoted in an anticlockwise direction to provide additional tension in band 11 via balance 16 and when lever 38 is released the additional tension is released. Revolution counter 14 is mounted on handlebars 3 and connected via flexible drive shaft 15 to shaft 6.
