Abstract

A multi-pole circuit breaker of compact construction has a plurality of switching chambers 3 arranged in series along an axis, each chamber 3 containing a set of switch contacts 21, 22, 23 and actuating means including a common shaft 31 extending in the axial direction through the switching chambers from a latch chamber 2 disposed at one end. The switch also includes slide members 42, 58 extending axially through the switching chambers from the latch chamber, each slide member 42, 58 being associated, in each switching chamber, with a respective thermal or magnetic overcurrent tripping device 19 or 20 arranged, when operated, to urge the respective slide member 42 or 58 in the axial direction to trip an actuating mechanism in the latch chamber 2. This mechanism comprises a latched toggle system manually operable by a shaft 5 and "trip-free" in operation. <IMAGE>
