Abstract

Photographic elements containing cyan redox dye releasers which provide images of superior heat and light fastness comprise a support having thereon at least one photosensitive silver halide emulsion layer which is permeable to an alkaline processing composition and which has associated therewith a non-diffusible dye-providing compound of the general formula: <IMAGE> wherein R is optionally substituted alkyl having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R<2> is <IMAGE> taken together with R and the nitrogen atom to which it is attached forms a 5 to 7 membered heterocyclic ring which is unsubstituted or is substituted with a carboxy group; R<1> represents an alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, an optionally substituted aryl group either of which may be substituted, or -NR<11>R<12> wherein R<11> represents alkyl having 1-6 carbon atoms or aryl either of which may be substituted and R<12> represents alkyl having 1-6 carbon atoms which may be substituted, or R<11> and R<12>, taken together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, form a heterocyclic ring which is unsubstituted or is substituted with a carboxy group; X is -CO- or -SO2-; R<3> is -COOH or -CAR and is attached in the meta or para position to X in the benzene ring; and CAR is a group which is capable of releasing an imagewise distribution of dye in diffusible form, possibly containing a fragment of CAR, as a function of silver halide development under alkaline conditions, provided that the compound contains at least one CAR group and at least one carboxy group except that when R and R<2> form a heterocyclic group and X is -SO2-, the compound may be free of carboxy groups. Certain of these redox dye releasers and intermediate compounds are prepared in Ex 1 and 2.
