Abstract

A movable mould platen 5 is slidable longitudinally on guides 6 carrying at one end an opposing fixed mould platen 7. The platen 5 is reciprocated to open and close a die 9 by a mechanism comprising connecting rods 19, 20 pivotally connected at their one ends to platen 5 and carrying at their other ends triangular externally toothed members 21, 22 kept, by a cam track 39a, in constant mesh with gears 25, 26 driven by a motor 4 to rotate about a fixed axis in the machine. The cam track 39a is engaged by a cam follower 38 carried by a pin 37 supporting the toothed members 21, 22 and rods 19, 20. The platen 5 can thus be made to reciprocate rapidly and reliably in a predetermined manner with a long dwell in the mould-closed position and rapid mould opening and closing movements provides a substantial increase in production rate. <IMAGE>
