Abstract

A low profile keyboard actuator for a typewriter has levers 21-25 pivotally mounted on a transverse shaft 28 mounted immediately in front of the typewriter. Each lever has a generally horizontal arm which contacts the keys and a depending arm of uniform length biased by spring 36 to depress a key. A common operating bar 42 cyclically driven by eccentric 24 moves a lever to depress a selected key and then restores the lever. Depression of all but the selected key is inhibited by a plurality of vertically superposed, transversely shiftable, binary-coded slides 44 having teeth which bear against all depending arms except that one corresponding to the selected key. An electric keyboard 18 or data source may provide signals to shift the slides and actuate the bar 42. <IMAGE>
