Abstract

A method of quantifying a protein, antibody, antigen or hapten includes linking the substance to a chemi-luminescent or bio-luminescent label and triggering a luminescent reaction by the addition of an oxidising agent or a catalyst. The emitted light is observed and this provides information about the substance of interest. In one aspect, the invention employs a luminescent reagent which consists of antibodies labelled with a luminescent material such as luminol to quantify antigens in an immunological assay, in which the luminescent labelled antibodies selectively bind to the antigens and the amount of light emitted is measured.
