Abstract
In small hysteresis motors for use in inertial quality gyroscopes significant dynamic imbalance of the rotor may be caused by random magnetisation of the rotor after each start-up. In the present invention a permanent magnet (5) having pole pieces (6,7) establishes a polarized magnetic field in an air gap (2) between a rotor (3) and stator (1) providing a rotating magnetic field such that the rotor (3) locks into synchronism on a uniquely defined axis of magnetisation. Shunts (8,9) of material having a ferromagnetic Curie point below the running temperature of the motor provide a path for the rotating magnetic field during start and run-up to synchronous speed, a conductive ring (4) producing starting and run up torque. <IMAGE>
