Abstract

The invention relates to a filter for treating a hot exhaust gas stream carrying combustible particles, which filter can be rejuvenated at a controlled rate to avoid excessive temperatures in the filter. The filter includes two reaction zones (19 and 21) in the flow path of the exhaust gas and flow diverter means (22) positioned to direct flow through the zones in succession. The flow diverter means (22) is adjustable in response to a predetermined variation in the gas stream to pass only a minority of the hot gas through the first zone (19) to rejuvenate the zone in a controlled fashion, the remainder of the flow passing directly to the second zone (21). The filter is particularly practicable for use in treating exhaust gas from Diesel engines. <IMAGE>
