Abstract

A system for automatically causing the brakes to be applied immediately upon impact of the vehicle with some other object, comprises a motor adapted to operate the brakes by winding a cable which is connected either directly to the brake pedal or to an hydraulic system for operating the brakes or to a pivotable member so disposed as to depress the brake pedal. A resiliently mounted means outside the vehicle is deflected by the object with which the vehicle is in collision, automatically causing actuation of a switch so that the motor is energised and the brakes are applied. Means are provided for holding the brakes in the operative condition when actuated by the motor, and there are further means accessible to the driver for subsequently releasing the brakes. The whole device is capable of operating automatically and may be rendered inoperative when required so that the vehicle brakes can be operated only manually.
