Abstract

A filament is disclosed which is formed of a copolymeric material comprising monomeric units of acrylonitrile, at least one ethylenically unsaturated ester and at least one significantly homopolymerizable sulphonic monomer. Also disclosed are processes for producing such a filament, and solutions used in such processes. The filaments have high lustre dye yields. The said copolymeric material may be a terniary copolymer of acrylonitrile, the ester and the sulphonic monomer, or may be mixture of a copolymer of acrylonitrile and the ester and a copolymer of acrylonitrile and the sulphonic monomer. Preferred sulphonic monomers are alkali metal or ammonium salts of an acid having the formula: <IMAGE> wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical and R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, represent a hydrogen atom or alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radical.
