Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain title hydrogel useful for materials of physiological supplies, by a method wherein an ethylenically unsaturated monomer such as an alkali metal salt of (meth)acrylic acid is polymerized in the presence of a bifunctional cpd. having two epoxy groups.
CONSTITUTION: At least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer selected from alkali metal salts of (meth)acrylic acid, or a mixt. of the ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a small amount of another copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer, such as maleic acid, fumaric acid, dimethylaminoethyl acrylate, or acrylonitrile, is polymerized in the presence of at least one bifunctional cpd. selected from cpd. of formula I, II and III (wherein l is 5W100; R is H, CH3; X is H, Cl, Br; m is 5W100; n is 5W100) to obtain the desired hydrogel having highly water- absorbing properties.
