Abstract

A water heater includes electric heaters (1 to 5) each having a different power rating, and electric switch means (12 to 21) which control the interconnection between the heaters and the supply (10, 11). A control knob 23 for the switch means can be switched to seventeen different settings including an 'OFF' position, each different setting connecting a different heater or combination of heaters to the supply and resulting in the heaters yielding heat energy at sixteen different rates for heating the water. The heater may be used to heat water for a shower. The switch means which may comprise microswitches or thyristors can be manually controlled, or it can be automatically controlled to keep the temperature of the heated water substantially constant. <IMAGE>
