Abstract

Liquid hydrocarbons are produced from coal by hydrogenation at elevated pressure to produce gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons and a residue which is gasified in the presence of oxygen at elevated pressure to produce a gas mixture from which is produced hydrogen tor recycle and a synthesis gas which is catalytically converted into methanol and/or dimethyl ether and subsequently into liquid hydrocarbons boiling in the gasoline range. The coal can be hydrogenated in a slurry of recycle oil using an iron oxide catalyst and the residue can be coked prior to gasification.
