Abstract

1399426 Synthesis gas TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 5 Feb 1973 5683/73 Heading C5E A process for disposing of sulphide-bearing waste water, e.g. refinery sour water comprises (1) mixing the waste water with a hydrocarbonaceous fuel, e.g. petroleum distillation residue, naphtha, gas oil, crude oil, coal tar, or coal, particulate carbon or petroleum coke in waste water or a liquid hydrocarbonaceous fuel; and (2) partially oxidizing the mixture with an oxygen rich gas in a free-flow non-catalytic synthesis gas generator at an autogenous temperature of 1500‹ to 3000‹ F. and at a pressure of 1 to 250 atmos. to produce an effluent stream of synthesis gas substantially comprising H 2 , CO, CO 2 and H 2 O and minor amounts of H 2 S, CH 4 , COS and particulate carbon. The effluent stream is cooled and scrubbed substantially free of the particulate carbon by contact with more waste water wherein substantially all the H 2 S present in the water is stripped therefrom. A portion of the waste water containing a dispersion of the particulate carbon from the scrubbing process is mixed with liquid hydro-carbonaceous fuel to comprise the fuel feed for the synthesis generator. H 2 S, COS, CO 2 and CH 4 are removed from the synthesis gas stream by refrigeration, which then may be mixed with steam and passed over a water gas shift catalyst at 750‹ to 1012‹ F. to produce hydrogen.
