Abstract

The invention permits changing of the effective depth of focus in the system to which the invention relates by providing a transducer unit (10) having a central section (18/16) and a separate surrounding annular section (20/16) which are effective in detecting different parts of the signal portion of the reflected beam, the central section detecting a part returning through only a small portion of the lens aperture and the annular section detecting the part returning through the remainder of the aperture. Switching (12) is coupled to the two transducer sections (18/16, 20/16) for selectively displaying either only the parts detected by the central portion or both that part and the part detected by the annular portion together. The switching can be used to select only the center portion (providing a greater depth of focus) for initial setting up prior to selecting both portions for a high resolution display of a target area in a desired plane with reduced depth focus. Alternatively the switching may be time-controlled relatively to the outward and return journeys of the transmitted pulses to provide maximum resolution within a small focal region of a relatively large aperture lens, using both center and annular portions of the transducer, while structure under examination but outside of that region can be displayed at lower resolution using only the center portion. <IMAGE>
