Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an invariably accurate color discrimination output by providing a contactless distance measuring instrument which measures a distance up to an object to be meausred, and a mechanism which varies the focal length of a projection optical system on the basis of the output of said distance measusring instrument. CONSTITUTION:A contactless distance measuring instrument measures a distance up to an object to be measured, and an automatic focus adjusting mechanism varies the focal length of a projection optical system on the basis of the output of said contactless distance measuring instrument. For example, a contactless distance measuring instrument 19 which outputs a signal K corresponding to one of addresses 1N-nN of the object 4 by utilizing an ultrasonic wave or infrared rays is fixed atop of the lens barrel of a projection lens 3. When the object 4 moves to an address Kn', a motor 24 is driven through a motor driving circuit 23 on the basis of the count output CD of a reversible counter 22 which corresponds to a difference between signals KN and KN' outputted from the contactless distance measuring instrument 19 and an address storage circuit 20, so that the projection lens 3 moves to the address Kn' in a movement stroke.
