Abstract

A gunnery training system for generating an electrical signal (by undisclosed means) from a composite optical display has a high-gain screen 10, a background projector 12, a target projector 14 and a tracer projector 16. A television camera 20 views the screen. Light from the background projector 12 to the screen 10 is circularly polarised by a polariser 18 and the light from the screen to the camera 20 is analysed by an opposed analyser 22. The screen 10 retains the polarisation of light reflected by it. The contribution of the background from projector 12 in the scene viewed by the camera is substantially attenuated by the opposed polariser 18 and analyser 22, enabling the tracer and/or target to be identified in the camera output by purely electrical means such as threshold detectors. <IMAGE>
