Abstract

An anion exchanger is based on a poly(arylethersulfone) of formula <IMAGE> where R<1> and R<2> are each hydrogen atoms or alkyl or phenyl groups, x is 1, 2 or 3 and y is 0 or 1, and having N- substituted alkylamino or alkylammonium groups of formula <IMAGE> where R<3>, R<4> and R<5> are alkyl or hydroxyalkyl groups, n is an integer and Y theta is an anion, substituted on aromatic rings separated from the sulfone groups by at least one aromatic ring. The anion exchangers are prepared by reacting a poly(arylethersulfone) with a halogenodialkylether or a mixture of HCl and a para- formaldehyde to form a halogenoalkylated polysulfone and aminating said halogenoalkylated polysulfone.
