Abstract

A device for checking vehicle disc brake pads for wear while in position on the vehicle, comprises a tubular body 2 with a cover 3 and an abutment 6 for engagement with the brake caliper 24, a sleeve 8 slidable in the body 2, a probe 10 slidable in the sleeve, springs 12, 13 urging the probe 10 slidable in the sleeve, springs 12, 13 urging the probe and sleeve to project forwardly from the body, and a locking pin (not shown) projecting transversely from the body and operable as a wedge to hold the sleeve 8 and probe in adjusted positions relative to the body. Removable caps 15 are fitted to the ends of the probe and have a length equal to the thickness of the pad backing plates. Different length caps can be used. Covers of different thickness can replace cover 3 for use of the device with calipers of different length. When positioned correctly with respect to the brake the lengths of the probe 10 (excluding the caps 15) projecting from the front end of the sleeve and from the cover 3 indicate the thickness of friction material remaining on the respective pads. <IMAGE>
