Abstract

Steel products e.g. rods or bars, leaving the final stand of a rolling mill (11) at a temperature above the austenite point of the steel, are passed through a series of cooling troughs (10) divided into sequential stages. Each stage includes at least two troughs and independently controllable water supply means (19) for its troughs. The water is introduced through the trough side walls and acts to quench the surface of the bar. The bar is subsequently further cooled in air.
