Abstract

A method of casting metal, preferably continuous, which comprises supplying molten metal through a pouring tube 1 which has its outlet end 2 below the surface of the poured metal 4 which is covered by casting powder and supplying a protective gas (e.g. N2) to the region at which the outer surface of the tube contacts the casting powder thereby reducing oxidation of the tube and hence wear at least at the said region. A device for carrying out the method is provided with a sleeve 12 for mounting the device in a fixed desired relationship to the pouring tube, and a slot nozzle 10 for directing gas supplied thereto as an annular stream to the region at which the pouring tube will contact the casting powder and gas supplies. <IMAGE>
