Abstract

A method of machining a workpiece 13 by grinding in which two or more grinding headstocks 12, 12a are fed simultaneously against respectively different zones of the workpiece and the mode of feed of the individual headstocks is changed in stages from an initial coarse feed to a fine feed and optionally thereafter to very fine feed, the method comprising maintaining the ratio or ratios of the radial forces applied by all the grinding headstocks to the workpiece constant at least during the period after any one of the headstocks has entered the last stage of machining. Like workpieces therefore deflect in a uniform manner under the effect of the forces exerted by the grinding operation so that the finished dimensions are reproducible from one workpiece to another. <IMAGE>
