Abstract

Rotatable friction discs 5 are adapted to be brought into engagement with opposed radial surfaces 3, 4 in a stationary housing 1 by means of an expander mechanism. The expander mechanism comprises a pair of axially separable pressure plates 6, 7 and incorporates an hydraulic piston and cylinder assembly 17 which is operative to move the pressure plates away from each other when the cylinder 19 is pressurised. A ball in recess mechanism 8,9 provides mechanical actuation when one of the pressure plates is rotated by pull-rod and lever mechanism 14, 11. A single annular hydraulic piston or an annular array of pistons may be provided. <IMAGE>
