Abstract
200,385. Smith, S. F. July 31, 1922. Treadle mechanism.-Cables 6 are attached to drums 5 on the wheel hub and, through slidable members 17, to driving arms 7 which are rigidly connected to pedal arms 13; the sliding members are adjusted from a control lever 42 by Bowden wires 41 in opposition to springs 24. The two wires may be wound on a drum 43 and two stops 32, 33 may have inclined ends which allow the lever 42 to pass but retain it until sprung apart by hand. Each driving arm 7 may have bearing spaces between ridges 16 for the sliding member 17 which may be mounted on two side plates 18 connected by pins 19, 20, which prevent the member from moving out of its bearing space. The drum 43 is of such a size that the member 17 passes over a ridge 16 for each half revolution of the drum. Each spring 24 is connected to the corresponding sliding members bv two cords 25, 26 passing over pulleys 27, 28 and 27 respectively. The driving arms and the pedal arms may be connected by a wire 30, and the arc of travel of these arms between their extreme position A, B, is preferably 106‹. The groove for the cable in the drum 5 may partly be in the form of a helix, being deepest in the part corresponding to the position B of the driving arms and varying from this depth to its minimum depth in a little over a right angle. Winding wheels 9 on the end of each drum 5 are connected by a cable 12 passing over a pulley 11 to make the pedals rise alternately. Specification 111,731 is referred to.
