Abstract
A laser 3 produces a beam which is scanned by means of a controllable diffraction grating 7 and is focussed onto a body 1 whose surface geometry is to be monitored. A photo-detector 11 receives laser radiation reflected from body 1 via an axially vibrating aperture device 10 and produces an output- signal dependent on the position of the image of the laser radiation on the body, relative to the centre of vibration. This output signal, via an amplifier 13, is taken to processing equipment for analysis. Body 1 (shown in cross-section) is elongate and moves axially whilst being scanned. Therefore a complete picture of the scanned surface may be obtained. By using a plurality of lasers and detectors around the body the whole surface of body 1 may be monitored. <IMAGE>
