Abstract

An apparatus for taking soil samples is disclosed (especially for taking soil samples from the sea bottom) which is to be lowered into a drill tube, and which comprises a tube (2), to be placed within the drill tube, with a sample box (4) at its lower end, an anvil (5) above the sample box (4), and a displaceable drop weight (8) above the anvil (5), and which is characterised by a gripper (7) secured to a hoisting cable (6) adapted to be in or out of co-operation with the drop weight (8), and an uncoupling device (9) for the gripper (7) located above the gripper, the uncoupling device (7) being always at a constant height above the lower end of the tube (2) during normal operation of the apparatus. The apparatus disclosed is particularly suitable for operation from a ship. <IMAGE>
