Abstract

In a vehicle washing machine having a portal 1 which moves relative to the vehicle to be washed and is mounted thereon, a vertically rotatable washing brush 5 is moved to one side when the washing operation is complete by a mechanism 7, 8, 9, 10 for converting the movement of the portal to movement of the brush relative to the portal to allow the vehicle to be driven through the portal. The mechanism may include a rack and pinion moving the brush carriage 4 either directly or indirectly by pulley wires. Alternatively the mechanism has a hydraulic system or a two-armed lever pivotting about an external fixed pivot or fixed inclined stop surfaces. <IMAGE>
