Abstract

A swaging mandrel comprises a hollow mandrel body, through which a cooling fluid flows, a tubular mandrel rod 7, through which conduits for supplying and discharging the cooling fluid extend, and a core member 12, which defines cooling passages 11 in which the cooling fluid is conducted from the free end of the mandrel along the inside surface of the mandrel body. The mandrel body comprises an outer shell 9 consisting of a material which has a high strength at elevated temperature. The shell surrounds a carrying sleeve 10 made of tool steel or materials having similar strength properties. A water-air mixture is used as cooling fluid. Such mandrel has a high resistance to wear at surface temperatures up to about 900 DEG C and can assume a high outside temperature so that the temperature of the workpiece is not substantially decreased. The mandrel can be subjected to a controlled cooling within a large range. <IMAGE>
