Abstract
200,326. Forkel, O. June 10, 1922. Planing. - Reversals are cushioned by an energy-storing device which accelerates the reversed member until it can be coupled to the driving-mechanism without shock. A shaft 19, Fig. 1, driven constantly in one direction from pulley 95 &c., carries a toothed pinion 9 and a sprocket 10 through which loose clutch members 6, 5 are driven reversely. A lever 64 actuating a double clutch 8 on a reversed shaft 20 is operated by means shown in Fig. 5 from a reciprocating table 30 driven from the shaft 20 through a bull wheel 1, Fig. 1. An intermediate shaft 21 carries a loose chain drum 78 connectable by a clutch 22. Near the end of its stroke, the table strikes a bowl 27 which throws in the clutch 22 causing the drum 78 to wind up a chain 32 and store energy in the device 39. This may be a pneumatic cylinder connected to a reservoir 41 and operated by a guided piston 38 pulled by the chain 32. To equalise the accelerating effect, the drum 78 has the eccentric shape shown in Fig. 3. An additional By-wheel 18, Fig. 1, is thrown into action on a slow working stroke by a clutch 15 to increase the kinetic energy on such stroke. Hydraulic means, or springs, or weights may be used to store the energy instead of the pneumatic means shown in Fig. 1.
