Abstract

200,301. Hepburn, G. G. May 22, 1922. Purifying liquids; filters with loose filtering-materials.-In the process for softening water described in Specification 173,255, the peaty or fibrous mass which constitutes the softening reagent is adapted to be compressed by a hand or power press to remove excess of water prior to its treatment with the regenerating agent, the mass being allowed to expand and absorb water during the softening process. The process is carried out in a press of the form shown in Fig. 1. The peat is carried on a bed of quartz &c. d supported on a perforated plate e, and an upper perforated plate f constitutes the pressure plate of the press. The spindle g of the press works in a bush h, the lower end of which forms a seat for the ring i of the plate f when in the raised position, whilst the upper end of the bush limits the downward movement of the plate. The plate f is provided with hooks which break up the peat when the plate is raised. The hooks may be replaced by multi-arm parts m, Fig. 2, mounted on a member n by spacing collars o. The water to be softened enters at a and discharges at b, but it may also be passed upwards through the peat. A perforated plate to rest directly on the peat may be provided, which is rigidly connected to the plate f, so as to move with it, and the space between it and the plate f may then be filled with quartz. By passing the regenerating solution slowly and continuously through the peat, the process may be made continuous.
