Abstract
Alpha-methylstyrene and a copolymerisable nitrile monomer, such as acrylonitrile, are grafted onto a spine of a diene rubber (containing at least 30% small particle size rubber) such as polybutadiene or poly- (butadiene-styrene) (up to 50%, of the alpha-methylstyrene may be replaced by styrene) in aqueous phase using an anionic emulsifier and a water-soluble free-radical polymerization initiator, such as a persulfate. The resultant graft polymer possesses good heat distortion temperature and a good balance between tensile strength, impact strength, and flow.
