Abstract

To meet the stringent physical and chemical criteria for protective coatings for paper or paperboard substrates bearing printed indicia or pictorial matter, radiation-curable coating compositions are provided which contain one or more new amide acrylate compounds of the general formula: <IMAGE> wherein X, Y and Z may each independently be H, alkyl, aryl, acrylyloxyalkyl, acrylyloxy aliphatic ester or acrylyloxy aliphatic ether, and wherein at least one of X, Y and Z must contain an acrylyloxy radical. The compositions are highly radiation-sensitive and very fast curing and form mar-resistance protective and decorative film coatings which are particularly useful as UV-cured overprint varnishes.
