Abstract

An apparatus for heat treating a continuous moving fibre with steam comprises a shell 2, 3 defining a passageway 10 connecting a fibre inlet to a fibre outlet and having inlet 5 and outlets 9 for the steam, a series of diaphragms 4 spaced apart along the passageway and having central orifices for the fibre, the diaphragms located between the fibre inlet and the steam inlet 5 being normal to the passageway axis with the spacing therebetween increasing towards the fibre inlet whereas the diaphragms 4 between the steam inlet 5 and the fibre outlet are uniformly spaced apart and inclined to the passageway axis. The shell is formed in two halves 2, 3 which meet in a plane and have grooves in their joining surfaces for a liquid seal and for conducting escaping steam or condensate to the outlets 9. <IMAGE>
