Abstract

A heat insulating structure comprises a skin 18 adapted to withstand the effect of the heat, spacers 19 adapted to hold the skin 18 spaced from a backing sheet 24, and a layer of interwoven gauze 23 interposed between the spacers 19 and the backing sheet 24. A supply of air 25 is caused to flow round the outside of the spacers 19 and through the gauze 23. The spacers 19 may be in the form of a corrugated sheet (as shown), individual struts or expanded honeycomb, while the gauze 23 may be of simple woven wire construction, brazed to the spacers 19 at 22, or of a felted or needled porous structure. <IMAGE>
