Abstract

A fractionable, elastic polypropylene has an inherent viscosity of 1.5 to 9, exhibits no yield point, a tensile set not exceeding 150% and contains 10 to 80% by weight of a diethyl ether- soluble fraction having an inherent viscosity exceeding 1.50 by weight and exhibits birefringence when a film formed from the fraction is viewed under crossed Nicol prisms in a polarising microscope at about 25 DEG C. The fractionable polypropylene and the diethyl ether-soluble fraction are each useful elastomeric materials. The polypropylene is prepared by polymerisation in the presence of hydrogen and as catalyst the reaction product of a partially hydrated metal oxide and a compound of the formula (RCH2)4M where M is Ti, 2r or Hf and R is an aryl or alkyl group, containing no hydrogen atom on the carbon atom bonded to the CH2 group, or a trialkyl silyl group.
