Abstract
The invention is a method of making composite particles which contain zeolites bound by a matrix of an oxide gel such as silica gel, and which may contain clay. Such composites are used for cracking hydrocarbons. In the method, an alkaline slurry containing the zeolites and an acidic sol of the oxide component in water is sprayed into a gaseous atmosphere before it has time to gel, so that it is formed into microspheroidal particles while it gels, but drying of the particles is avoided so that the gelled particles still contain most or all of the water. This technique saves on energy during the spraying operation, and makes it easier to remove alkali metal from the resultant particles.
