Abstract

In syllabic compressors and expanders a control signal is required to control the gain of the device which effects compression or expansion. In this invention a first control signal following long term amplitude variations of the input signal is derived by means of an RMS detector 11. A second control signal following short term amplitude variations is derived by an adaptive smoothing circuit 13 of known form. The two control signals act in combination. They may be added together to provide a single control signal for a variable gain amplifier 23 or they may be applied to control respective, series-connected, variable gain amplifiers. The invention enables the advantage of an adaptive technique to be obtained without the need to set levels to get the correct results in a compressor - expander processing system. <IMAGE>
