Abstract

An ignition system for a spark ignition internal combustion engine comprises an ignition coil (11), a primary thyristor (SCR 2) connected in series in with a primary winding (12) of the coil and a commutating capacitor (C6) from which a pulse of electrical energy can be delivered to the primary winding of the coil to initiate a spark at a spark plug (2) of the engine. The ignition coil stores electrical energy which continues to be delivered to the spark plug after the capacitor has become substantially discharged. The ignition system may be formed by adding an adaptor to an existing coil ignition system. <IMAGE>
