Abstract

This invention relates to the final stabilisation of nitrocellulose after pressure boiling and, in particular, to the final stabilisation of pressure-boiled nitrocellulose suitable for use as collodion wool for lacquers. Final stabilisation of nitrocellulose is required in order to eliminate instability caused by secondary reactions in the pressure-boiling process and to adjust the chain length of the nitrocellulose. No satisfactory stabilisation treatment has hitherto been found, attempts having resulted in processes involving complicated equipment or long treatment times. This invention provides a stabilisation treatment involving a combination of a centrifuging step at 1000 to 1600 rpm and a washing treatment with from 1 to 10 parts of warm water. The washing treatment is effected for a period of only 15 to 30 seconds and thereafter the nitrocellulose is taken up with water and removed.
