Abstract

199,392. Ingersoll-Rand Co., (Assignees of Haight, H. V.). June 19, 1922, [Convention date]. Percussive drills.- In a machine for opening out the holes in drill-shanks and other hollow articles, having a fluid actuated double-ended hammer piston, the hammer is adapted to drive in or retract the punch according as it strikes one or the other of a pair of anvil blocks in one of which the punch is mounted. The hammer J is mounted in a cylinder B to either end of which fluid may be admitted by an oscillating or other type of valve O. The anvil block R carrying the punch Z is allowed a limited outward movement in the cylinder after which it engages a crosshead S rigidly connected by bolts W to a rear crosshead U in which a second anvil block T is mounted. The work Y is held manually or clamped and rests in a guide X<1> which is pivoted in the crosshead S and operates the fluid pressure control valve j. After delivery of the driving blow, the work and attached punch are drawn forward to bring the rear anvil block T within range of the hammer which is then actuated to withdraw the punch by depressing the guide X<1>. The valve j may be actuated by a treadle in which case the guide X<1> is rigidly secured to the crosshead S. The apparatus may be independently mounted or may form part of a drill-sharpener &c.
