UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY VERCOE HAIGHT, OF SHERBROOKE, QUEBEC, CANADA, ASSIGNOR TO INGIER- SOLD-RAND COMPANY, 01 JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
SHANK AND BIT PUN QH.
Application filed June 19, 19251.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY V. Halal-IT, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, a resident of Sherbrooke, Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, have invented a certain Shank and Bit Punch, of which the following is a specification accompanied by drawings.
This invention relates to machines for punching hollow objects. but more particularly to a fluid actuated shank and bit punch of the hammer type for punching the shanks and bits of hollow drill steels.
The objects of the invention are to improve upon the construction and operation of machines of this type, enable relatively hard blows of impact to be imparted to the pin for hammering the pin into the steel, and secure blows of impact forhammeringz the pin outof the steel. of substantially equal force to those utilized for driving the pin in.
Greater trouble has been experienced in driving the pins into and out of the shanks of drill steels, than with the bits, principally because the pin must be driven considerably further into the shank in order to clear the hole. The hammer piston of mypresent device is adapted to strike a severe blow upon a forward anvil block holding the pin, and when the pin is to be driven out of the hole in the steel, the hammer piston will strike an equally severe blow upon a rearward. anvil block, which has been brought into the path of impact of the hammer, while the forward anvil block has been withdrawn from the path of impact.
The invention is illustrated in several of its preferred forms in the accompanying drawings, in which s Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in perspective and partly in longitudinal section, showing a machine embodying the invention; i
Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in longitudinal section of: the punching mechanism, with the parts in a different position from that indicated in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to 1, showing a different form of controlling valve; and
Fig. i is a transverse sectional elevation on the line ife of Fig. 3 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawings, the machine is shown mounted. on the pedestal A for purposes or illustration, although it is L0 be Serial No. 569,474.
understood that the machine may be mounted on a drill. sharpener, or in any other suitable manner. A fluid pressure cylinder B having the valve chest C is suitably mounted on the pedestal A between the front head D and the back head E, which heads are secured to the frame F of the pedestal A as by means of the bolts G. The frame F is provided with guide yokes H, within which the front and back heads D and E are positioned and securely held.
A double ended hammer piston having a head J and forwardly and rearwardly eX- tending reduced shanks K and L is adapted to be reciprocated in the cylinder D and a suitable valve 0 shown in this instance as an oscillating valve, to which motive fluid is supplied from the inlet pipe P, controls the distribution of fluid to the cylinder for actuating the piston J. Any suitable form of valve and arrangement of distribution ports. and passages may be provided, so that this portion of the device need not be further described. The front and back heads and cylinder are additionally held together as by means of side bolts Q shown in Figure 4. I
A front anvil block E separate from the piston isinserted in the front head B and a front cross head S extends over the anvil block and front head. Similarly at the rear end, a rear anvil block T also separate from the piston is inserted in the back head E and a rear cross head U is located over the rear anvil block. The front and back cross heads S and U re spaced apart by means of the spacers V, which may be in the form of sleeves, and through bolts WV passing through the spacing sleeves hold the front and rear cross heads together. The spacers and through bolts also pass through the yokcs H of the pedestal A as indicated in the figures, and by means of this construction, the front and back cross heads S and U may be bodily moved back and forth on the front and back heads D and E through a given distance. i In the present instance, a guide or support X for the drill steel Y is suitably carried by one of the bolts WV and the drill steel Y rests in the guide X in position to have the hole or bore of the drill steel opened by the pin Z carried by the front anvil block R.
In Figures 1 and 2. the machine is adapted to be controlled by means of a foot controlled valve a. Motive fluid enters the valve chest 6 through the supply pipe 0 from any suitable source, and tie valve 0 controls a passage in the valve chest leading to the pipe P which is connected to the distributing valve chest C of the punch. The alve stem cl of the controlling valve a extends through the stufiing box 6 in position to be actuated by a finger f on a rock shaft 9 which may be rocked by a foot lever h as indicated in Figure 1.
In Figure 3 the valve j in the valve chest 70 controls the passage of motive fluid from the supply pipe 0 to the pipeP as in Figure 1, but the valve stem p extends into a position on the machine which permits the valve j to be operated by the guide arm X tor the drill steel, which guide arm is pivoted at the point 9 on the front cross head S. A compression spring 1* on the bracket 8 which holds the valve chest 7;, serves to retract or return the guide arm X after it has been pressed downwardly in order to open the controlling; valve 7'.
In the operation of the apparatus illustrated in all of the figures, when motive fluid is applied to the cylinder of the punching device, with the parts in the position indicated in Figures 1 and 3, the front anvil block R: will be in position to receive the blows of impact of the piston Pl, while the rear anvil block T will be out of the path of the piston. The pin 7 will be hammered into the hollow article to be punched and when a pin has been driven sufiiciently far either into the shank or the bit of the drill steel. for instance, the drill steel Y, which may have been held in the hand or clamped if desired. should be pulled towards the operator. Suflicient pull upon the drill steel Y, will serve to pull the front and back cross heads S and II forwardly from the position indicated in Figure 1. to the position indicated in Figure 2, for instance. and at the same time the front anvil block 31 will be withdrawn out of the path of the piston. while the ba k anvil block T will be moved into the path ot' the piston. The blows of: impact will then be struck upon the back anvil block. which will hammer the pin out of the steel in an obvious manner.
I claim:
1.. In a fluid actuated machine for punch inn hollow articles. the combination of a cylinder and double-ended reciprocating hammer piston, anvil blocks separate from the piston at each end of the cylinder. one anvil block being adapted to carry pin. and means for causing the piston to impart blows of impact to one or the other of the said anvil blocks according: to the direction in which the pin is to be driven.

4;. In fluid actuated machine for punchi112 hollow articles, the combination of a cylinder and double-ended reciprocating hammer piston, anvil blocks separate from the piston at each end of thecylinder. one anvil block being adapt d to carry a pin, a .t'ront head and a rear head for the cylinder, front and rear crosshcads connected together and movable relatively to said front and rear heads. and means for moving said crossheads to bring one anvil block or the other into the path of the piston according to the direction in which the pin is to be driven.
In a fluid actuated machine for punchinp; hollow articles. the combination 01 a cylinder and double-ended reciprocating piston. an anvil block at each end of the cylinder. one anvil block being adapted to carry a pin. a front head and a rear head tor the cylinder in which the said anvil blocks are movable. front and rear crossheads connected together and movable relatively to said front and rear heads. said crossheads en losing the anvil blocks. and means for moving said crossheads to bring one anvil block or the other into the path of the piston according to the direction in which the pin is to be driven.
6. In a fluid actuated machine for punching hollow articles, the combination of a cylinder and double-ended reciprocating piston. an anvil block at each end of the cylinder. one anvil block beino, adapted to carry a pin. front and rear crossheads for said oVliUdOI movable relatively to the cylinder, spacing members between said crossheads. side rods connecting the crossheads. and means for moving said crossheads to bring one anvi block or the other into the path o? the piston accordinsr to the direct-ion in which the pin is to be driven.
In testimony whereof I have signed this s ecification.
