Abstract

199,095. Jones, F. C. March 11, 1922. India-rubber &c., preparation of; vulcanizing.- Vulcanized rubber doughs are produced by preparing a self-vulcanizing gelling solution, and mixing this solution before it gets with a precipitant for rubber such as acetone, alcohol &c. By adding the gelling solution to a mixture of a precipitant and solvent such as benzene, or naphtha, a stable, non-gelling solution of vulcanized rubber results. According to examples, to 100 cc. of a 12¢ per cent solution of rubber vulcanized by the Peachey process, is added 150-200 cc. of acetone as the liquid thickens towards gelling, whereupon the rubber is precipitated as a dough, which can be moulded or otherwise worked before drying. If the vulcanized solution be poured carefully into 100 cc. of a mixture of 1 part of acetone to 2 parts of benzene, a stable solution results. Fillers, colouring matter &c. may be added to the dough.
