Abstract

A catalytic material for the synthesis of ammonia comprises a mixture of (1) the nitride or amide of lithium, uranium, calcium, barium, strontium, titanium, glucinum, molybdenum, or vanadium, (2) an inert oxide, such as magnesia or lime, and (3) powdered lead, cadmium, bismuth, antimony, commercial zinc (which contains bismuth, cadmium, and lead as impurity), gold, copper, or silver, which accelerates the decomposition in hydrogen of the nitride or amide. With the exception of zinc, all the metals mentioned under (3) above are prepared by heating the oxides in hydrogen, preferably in the presence of the inert oxide to prevent fusion. Ammonia is obtained by passing a mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen over the catalytic material at a temperature less than 600 DEG C. and at atmospheric pressure. Specification 140,061 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3 (a) describes also the formation of ammonia by passing nitrogen and hydrogen alternately over the catalytic mixture. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), describes the formation of ammonia by passing nitrogen and hydrogen alternately over a catalytic material consisting of a mixture of (1) the nitride or amide of lithium, uranium, calcium, barium, strontium, titanium, glucinum, molybdenum or vanadium, (2) an inert oxide, such as magnesia or lime, and (3) powdered lead, cadmium, bismuth, antimony, commercial zinc (which contains bismuth, cadmium and lead as impurity), gold, copper or silver, which accelerates the decomposition in hydrogen of the nitride or amide. With the exception of zinc, all the metals mentioned under (3) above are prepared by heating the oxides in hydrogen, preferably in the presence of the inert oxide to prevent fusion. The ammonia synthesis is effected at atmospheric pressure and at a temperature less than 600 DEG C. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
