Abstract
198,719. Davies, G. M., Davies, W., and Edwards, F. F. April 12, 1922. Angular bending; shearing.- In a machine for doubling and shearing tin-plates or sheets of the kind in which the sheet is held by side and end stops and doubled by a table having a leaf mounted on a rock shaft, the sheet is held between a longitudinally adjustable end stop, a spring-controlled off-side stop and a spring-controlled depressible and adjustable near-side stop, and the leaf is mounted on spring-controlled rising and falling hinges and is rocked by arms through a swing- ing frame which is connected to the reciprocatory part of a driving member connected to its shaft by a pedal-operated clutch. The table top of the machine is on a level with the flooring plates of the rolling mill and consists of a fixed plate a<1> and a leaf a<2> pivoted on spring-controlled rising and falling hinges a<3>. The leal is connected by links c<3> to arms c<2> on a shaft c which is rocked by a suspended U- shaped frame d connected by a rod d' to the reciprocatory part of the driving-member. The work sheet j is placed on the table against an adjustable end stop i and against an off-side stop g, which is normally pressed forward by a spring. On slightly depressing a pedal e, a lever k<3> pivoted to a casing h' is raised by a linkage k<1>, k so as to bring its extension k<4> into engagement with an inclined extension m on a lever m<1> and so remove a spring-pressed pawl m<3> from contact with a fixed rack m<4> to allow a slotted rod h<4> on which the pawl is carried to be pressed upward by its spring. A finger h<2> forming the near-side stop, which is normally held in the retracted position by cam plates h<3> on the rod engaging cam surfaces h<5> on the finger, is thus released and pressed forward, by its spring to engage and hold the edge of the work. This stop is adjusted by a screw h<7>. The pedal is then fully depressed and through a rod e<1> puts in a one revolution clutch on the driving shaft so that the leaf a<2> is moved on its pivots so as to double the sheet, the hinged end of the leaf rising to accommodate itself to the thickness of the sheet. Towards the end of the forward movement, the stop g is withdrawn by a wiper c<4> on the shaft c engaging a lever g<2> pivotally connected to the stop rods g<1>. At the same time the leaf a<2> depresses the rod h<4> until it is flush with the table top and is looked by its pawl m<3>, the stop h<2> being thus withdrawn from contact with the sheet. At the end of the backward movement of the leaf the clutch is disengaged and the sheet then removed and placed with its raw edges between the blades of a shearing device. The pedal is then again fully depressed to operate the shears. The movable blade b is pivoted and is actuated by a crank f on the shaft c through a link f<1>.
