Abstract

Oil reservoirs.-The air pump in the reservoir of a miners' incandescent safety lamp is provided with means for preventing an excessive pressure in the reservoir. The pump illustrated comprises a piston 51 and a tubular piston-rod 46 reciprocable in a barrel 44 which is arranged in the lamp reservoir 1 and is surrounded by a protecting tube 63. On the inward stroke of the piston the operator places his thumb over the opening in the piston-rod and air is forced through a spring-pressed valve 49 in a valve seat 56 into a chamber in the barrel 44 between the seat 56 and a diaphragm 55, when the piston contacts with a tail-piece 60 on the valve 49. This chamber communicates with the reservoir through ports 54, 62 formed in the barrel 44 and tube 63 respectively. When the reservoir pressure exceeds a predetermined limit, the air escapes through a spring-pressed valve 58 into a chamber in the barrel 44 between the valve seat 57 and the diaphragm 55 and then escapes through a bye-pass 61 and the hollow piston-rod 46 into the atmosphere on the return stroke. In the innermost position of the piston the operating button 47 on the piston rod enters a recess in a disc member 50 closing the barrel body 44.
