Abstract
195,665. Royce, F. H., and Rolls- Royce, Ltd. Oct. 11, 1921. Toothed gearing.-In double helical gearing, a hollow driving-pinion c is carried axially movable in roller bearings c<2> with the inner race moving with the pinion and the outer race stationary, or in ball bearings in which both races move with the pinion. The pinion is connected to the crank-shaft d by an intermediate hollow flexible shaft e respectively connected to cups c<4>, d<5> secured to the pinion and crank-shaft, by teeth c<5>, d<6> permitting slight relative axial movement and angularity. The pinion c is also connected directly to the crank-shaft by a Weston clutch f which will transmit about one-eighth of the load, for the purpose of damping out vibration. The driven gear-wheel g is secured to a shaft supported by roller bearings g<3>, g<5> and a ball thrust bearing g4. The whole of the gearing is carried in a divided casing provided with supporting- webs. According to the Provisional Specification the invention is applicable for use with aero engines, turbines, and the like.
