Abstract
195,415. Clift, C. E., and Parsons, P. R. Oct. 22, 1921. Screw-threads and other helical surfaces, grinding and treating.-In a machine for shaping propeller blades and like helical surfaces, an abrading tool is reciprocated transversely across the blade which is relatively reciprocated longitudinally of its axis, the tool being fed longitudinally from tip to root while the bladeis slowly rotated about its axis. In the form shown the blade 1 is mounted between centres on connected members 2, 3 adapted to travel along guides 4, 5. The tool 8 is mounted on a bar 7 forming part of a frame 9 which is transversely reciprocated on guides 10 by means of a screw 11 driven from pulleys 12. At a point beneath the tool, the frame 9 is connected by a link 14 to the head 2 so that as the tool is reciprocated the blade is simultaneously moved longitudinally under the control of the link bar. The feed is operated from a hand wheel 19 which through a gear train actuates a pinion 17 engaging rack teeth on the link bar which is thus gradually shortened the blade being simultaneously rotated about its axis through the gearing shown in Fig. 6. In a modification the blade may be carried on a stationary table and the link bar may impart to the tool frame an additional movement longitudinally of the blade axis.
