Abstract
195,195. Earle, K. J. Jan. 14, 1922. Self-driving plant.-A self-driving engine dependent on centrifugal force comprises masses, which are rotated about an axis by an accelerating force and move radially a certain distance against a resistance, the masses then continue to rotate meanwhile giving up their kinetic energy and returning to their starting radius. Fig. 12 illustrates an example in which the axles 2 together with masses 1 are driven at an accelerating speed by the action of compressed air issuing from containers 11 and operating motors 12. After the axles have been turned through a certain angle the air supply is cut off automatically and the masses 1 are released and fly outwards along the radius arms 3 compressing spring 19 in so doing. The outward motion of the masses is limited by stop 17 and they then rotate in a circular path operating a pump to recharge partially the containers 11. When the speed of the masses has been sufficiently reduced they are returned by the action of the spring 19. The outward movement of the masses 1 operates dynamos 26 through levers and rods 24 and members 25. The dynamos charge batteries 28 which, in addition to supplying current for external work, also supply it to motors 29 to drive pumps 30 to aid in recharging the air-containers 11.
