Abstract
194,779. Mitchell, R. Dec. 15, 1921. Combination and convertible apparatus.- Motor lorries and like vehicles are adapted for the collection of refuse by attaching a rotary brush and a conveyer, both driven by power obtained from the motor. The conveyer and its casing are slidable laterally into position on the vehicle between the body and the driver's cab with the endless conveyer adapted to travel across and around the vehicle. As shown, the conveyer casing is rectangular with one vertical side 38 arranged to hinge outwards about the hinges 60 to facilitate, its attachment to, or removal from, the vehicle, and also that of the conveyer 50 from its casing. The casing is slidden into position across the vehicle between the body 3 and the cab and bolted to angle-irons secured to the chassis 1. The chains 51 which carry the brackets 50 of the conveyer, pass over sprocket wheels, one in each corner of the casing, keyed on shafts 53 extending between the sides of the casing. One shaft 53 extends beyond the casing and is driven by chain-gearing 55 from a shaft 57, which is rotated, through a clutch controlled by a lever 28 in the cab, by gearing driven from the main driving shaft 19. The road-sweeping brush 9 is carried in bearings supported at the lower ends of extensible arms 6 pivoted at their upper ends in side brackets 5 secured to a plate 4 on one side, and to a smaller plate on the opposite side of the vehicle, both being readily detachable from the chassis. The brush is driven by chain gearing 35 through a rotary shaft controlled also by the clutch, the whole of the driving gear for the conveyer and sweeping brush being mounted upon the plate 4, and is thus readily detachable from the vehicle. The refuse is carried by the conveyer buckets to the top of the casing, where it is released and directed in its fall by the sloping roof 41 of a water tank 61<a>, housed between the sides of the casing, into the body 3 of the vehicle. The water is sprayed through a sprinkler 63 upon the road in advance of the brush. When it is desired to use the vehicle for other purposes the driving chains 55 and 51 are disconnected and the conveyer and its casing removed from the vehicle. The plates carrying the supporting and driving gear for the road brush and conveyer are then removed and the chains 45, carrying the upper part 44 of the brush casing, are detached from the chassis, when the dismantling is complete.
